What started as a mountain retreat in 1894 at the hands of E. J. Kinzel – and later a mountain hotel in 1914 is now Townsend, Tennessee’s most exclusive mountain community.

The history behind the land is quite interesting, as it was a mountain retreat created in 1894 by E.J. Kinzel becoming a resort type area for affluent visitors from Knoxville and other areas of the South before the National Park was formed.

On May 17, 1894 E.J. Kinzel, an East Tennessee nature lover, purchased 29 and 7/16 acres on the west side of the Little River in the Great Smoky Mountains. On this picturesque site with two mineral springs he built his mountain retreat for family and friends. He climbed the four mountain tops surrounding the area and, being a religious man, he named them Mt. St. Matthew, Mt. St. Mark, Mt. St. Luke, and Mt. St. John. After this magnificent mountain retreat attracted so many visitors, he built the Kinzel Springs Hotel in 1914. The hotel boasted a dance pavilion, tennis, croquet, swimming in the Little River, mineral springs, and horseback riding for visitors from near and far. This all passed when the hotel burned to the ground and the new highway (now Hwy. 321) was built in the old Little River Railroad bed in 1925.

With its close proximity to the National Park (6 miles), Cades Cove (12 miles) and the Little River, one can experience the beauty of the mountains and nature. While just an equal distance to the north, one can find an 18 hole golf course just 3 miles away, big city amenities and shopping in Maryville, McGhee Tyson Airport (18 miles away) in Alcoa (the major airport in East Tennessee) and Knoxville. Kinzel Springs is an excellent location for a mountain retreat - whether it be a permanent residence or vacation home.
